Be Green Worm Compost

Worm Composting Is An Easy Way To Be Green So you want to do your part to help the environment and leave less of a footprint. Maybe you just want a lower garbage bill or like in my case, make better soil for my garden. The simple answer is worm composting. Instead of throwing all of your organic waste into your garbage can, you can just feed it to the worms. Worms will eat all of your left over and rotten produce, bread, pasta, and even your junk mail. In return for the free meals, they give you sweet smelling, rich soil conditioner called vermicast and worm tea. You will need approximately two pounds of worms for about a pound of food waste per day and a place for them to live. You can purchase one of the worm composters offered online or build one yourself out of plastic bins. They both seem to work well. The composting process is simple. Once you have a home for your worms, you need to make a bed for them with things such as wet shredded newspaper, junk mail, and cardboard. Then you can add organic matter such as dead leaves, rotten produce, and even pasta, as long as there is no meat, along with a handful of dirt. The worms will begin to eat and before long you will have turned your garbage into brown gold. Next time you accidentally let your produce sit too long in the 'fridge, don't feel bad, you can feed them to the worms! |
