Flicking Your Cigarette Butt IS Littering! For some reason, people seem to think that when they are finished smoking their cancer stick, they can just flick the butt where ever they please. They don't seem to notice that it does not magically disappear in mid air, it actually lands on the ground and stays there. Cigarette Butts are not biodegradable or organic. They do not decompose. In fact, they can be very dangerous for the environment. According to http://www.cawrecycles.org/issues/cigarettes/toxic_trash they carry up to 60 known carcinogens. These are absorbed by the filters and can leach out into our environment. The filters that hold all of these chemicals do not decompose, they just sit there leaching into our soil and eventually through our storm drains and ocean.
I am especially amazed that smokers think the beach is a giant ash tray. Butts can be very dangerous to marine life. They represent a choking hazard to all animals and small children. Nicotine is a know pesticide and is lethal to certain fish and other sea creatures. Let's put this in simple terms. Cigarettes are toxic. Toxins are harmful to our envronment. If that doesn't mean anything, how about Cigarette Butts can mean toxic sushi. Bottom Line, if you can't quit smoking, don't flick your butt on the ground. |

Some people become accustomed to frequent news of danger to the environment, perhaps even thinking, ‘That is not of great concern as long as it does not affect me.’ However, whether we realize it or not, the wholesale destruction of the earth’s environment affects the vast majority of people. Since contamination of our planet is now so pervasive, it likely already affects more than one aspect of our lives. We should all be concerned about the health and preservation of our home. After all, where else would we live?
